The Angel in the House is a narrative piece of poetry by Coventry Patmore, first published in 1854 and expanded until 1862. Although largely ignored upon publication, it became enormously popular in the United States during the later 19th century and then in Britain, and its influence continued well into the twentieth century as it became part of many English Literature courses once adopted by W. W. Norton & Company into The Norton Anthology of English Literature.
The poetry is in two main parts, but was originally published in four installments. The first was published with the main title in 1854. It was followed by "The Espousals" (1856), "Faithful for Ever" (1860), and "The Victories of Love" (1862). The latter two installments are effectively a separate poem, related to the main text.

I have been reading lots of poems that are relatively new to me. Coventry Patmore wrote during a period that was pretty much familiar to me but he was not of the great poets of the last decades of the 19th century. This long poem sequence is on marriage and is pretty good but not great. I have read worse but I have also read some better.Product details

Very good and interesting. The angels are always there for US know matter what you always have an Angel with you.
Poem on sacredness of homelife. Whatever format issues the other reviewer mentioned has been fixed as did not appear in my kindle version.
This version of "The Angel in the House" is from the Gutenberg Project. When transformed for the , it is EXTREMELY poorly done. Every other line is indented per the poem's format, but in the version, this indent comes through as a series of "???????" presumably one for every space of indent. The result is that this version is nearly unreadable on the . Instead of a pleasant reading experience, you're constantly fighting the poor formatting. I realize that it's only $0.99, but still...live a little and spend just a bit more to get a copy you can actually read.
